Recently I was talking with an anonymous person we shall call “Ned’, who is either a late generation Z’der or maybe an Alpha. Anyway he didn’t know who “The Skyhooks” were but was familiar with Kylie Minogue. Unfortunately the song “Locomotion” stuck eerily in my head for the rest of that day.
“Ned” did know about the existence of “old” cars including Fords, Holdens and Valiants (also known as Chryslers). These stalwart vehicles were embedded in our culture and were not great concerning rusting, cornering or stopping quickly.
These vehicles were built to a price and purpose so you can’t expect to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.
In historic terms there was a time without cars, when horse power was just that. In the age of science fiction authors like Jules Verne imagined submarines and spaceships. They knew the concepts and purpose of such vehicles and it was just the lack of technology that prevented such inventions from being realized. Another such prophesy was the auto-mobile, which we have taken to an art form and object of a type of cult worship. They would have been an evolution of a steam train without tracks with a few electric bits and other stuff added.
Imagine this: if you were a car what would it be, in your fantasy? How might this delusion be reflected in an honest friend’s appraisal? Would this be how a Ferrari becomes a Smart 2 or a GT-R a Datsun Sunny? Friends can be as cruel as is truth.
Anyway I had intended to look at another facet of imagination and fantasy which could now actually be realized-the mighty KITT, the car. Next time.
