(In a distant time and place).
I was sitting in a hotel front bar in 1975. When I ordered a beer it was, well, just the beer.
This was long before the multitude of offerings, well before craft beers.
At that time I owned a two capitol letter, British sports car. It, and all other cars I assumed, ran on 30-40 oil. This was as common and accepted as the generic beer I was drinking.
I’m still not sure how the mysterious friction parts of a motor ran. But in my heart of hearts I knew and trusted that Castrol XL 30-40 and a magical Moly-bond additive would protect my car.
Listening to it running after an oil change bought me joy. Satisfaction, in my wisdom made me feel so proud. I was, quite modestly, a switched -on technocrat.
This was all before the internet, when life was so blissfully uncomplicated.
It was a simple time when a T.V. advert told us that, “Oils ain’t oils Sol ‘, and that Castrol was the wisest choice-mainly because Sol looked like a nice, honest bloke.
This was when my quest to discover the secrets of oil began. I desperately wanted to protect my precious vehicle from the ravages of friction and time.
Now, in a time shift moment, I wanted to know what SAE, VII, SYNTHETIC and numerous other non-deplumes and acronyms connected to oils actually meant.
This is my journey, which I would love to share with you.
