Songs where cars are the subject or object could easily be turned into a playlist for a road trip or just a nice drive. Remember the focus is the journey, not necessarily the destination.
A drive can be refreshing and even cathartic, great for the soul.
Why not compile a road-track of music-the soundtrack for one.
Many songs seem to, quite obviously, have a metaphoric dimension. These more philosophical ones are better for your more profound, meaning of life days. Whatever the lyrical content there is almost always catchy chorus lines and beautiful resonating beat. Get immersed and dream on but at the same time remain the safe, alert driver. Some things just don’t mix.
Here are a few possible with varying degrees of depth and profoundness.
Start with The Beach Boys (who weren’t that) with “Fun fun fun”. The punchline being:
“And she’ll have fun fun fun / Til her daddy takes the t-bird away”.
Equally as mind altering is Queen’s “I’m In Love With My Car”. How much more soul searching is:
“Told my girl I’ll have to forget her/ Rather buy a new carburettor”.
More in keeping to the pure spirit of a road-trip is chuck Berry’s “Riding Along In My Automobile”. The lines:
“Cruisin' and playing the radio/ With no particular place to go", capture the essence of a drive.
A little naughty, but necessary in a balanced playbook would be Grace Jones' ‘Pull Up to The Bumper”. A somewhat evocative suggestion in:
“Pull up to my bumper/ In your long black limousine”. No one needs a crash on a drive.
